Security features of the new Georgia DL/IDs are designed to prevent counterfeiting or alteration of information and photographs and make it easier to identify fraudulent licenses and identification cards.
The Interim DL/ID is printed on a secure paper, with color backgrounds, color images, color photo, and customer signature. When properly folded the Interim DL/ID is similar in size to the permanent DL/ID.
Customers who are issued an ID for Disabled Person may provide medical information which will appear on the back of the ID card.
Yes. The date on which an under 21 teen reaches age 21 will not be on the new DL/IDs.
The DL/IDs and permits for customers under age 21 will be displayed in the vertical format. The vertical format is illustrated on our brochure.

The new Commercial DLs and permits will be labeled with the word “Commercial" and will be printed in a distinctive blue text.
The new cards will contain a bar code that is compliant with AAMVA (American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators) standards. The bar code is designed to allow access by law enforcement, retailers and government entities. The barcode will contain the information defined on the front of the card and can be used to expedite verification that the front of the document has not been altered.

The DL/IDs' physical dimensions are the same as the current DL/IDs. However, there will be a vertical orientation of the DL/ID if the card holder is under the age of 21.
The new Permanent DL/IDs has a new appearance, contains more security features, and will be mailed to you from a secure production facility.
The process, including the time frame, will be the same as the current automated renewal program.
Yes! Georgia residents who are United States citizens may continue to apply to register to vote as part of many transactions conducted at the DDS' customer service centers or via the internet.
Customers will have their Permanent DL/ID mailed to them before the Interim’s expiration date if they meet all eligibility and verification requirements. The new cards are centrally produced at a secure production facility in Georgia, then mailed to the cardholder, who will generally receive the new DL/ID within 30 days of receiving the interim document.
Mailing from a centralized facility will reduce the opportunity for fraud and theft by operating the document printing process in a highly secure facility. The permanent DL/ID will be mailed to the customer address on record with DDS from the secured production facility located in Georgia.

The new DL/IDs will position Georgia to become compliant should the State choose to comply with any federal licensing mandates.
Yes, DL/IDs, Instructional Permits and Limited Permits will remain separate documents. Customer may have different documents based on the services they are requesting.
It depends on what is being issued. If class restrictions apply, separate Interims will be issued.
Yes. For first issuance, renewals or replacements, customers are still required to provide original documentation to satisfy identity, residency and citizenship requirements.

Yes. An important security feature is the orientation of the “Under 21” year old DL/IDs. The Interim and Permanent DL/IDs will be printed vertically for easy identification of customers under the age of 21 years. Multiple levels of card security will deter tampering and reduce fraud.
When you receive the Permanent DL/ID, the Interim license should be destroyed in accordance with Georgia law and to safeguard personal information.
The customer should review their Permanent DL/ID. If, the customer should find a discrepancy with their DL/ID, they should immediately return to the CSC and reinitiate the process to correct the error.
Yes, the Permanent DL/IDs will be mailed to a customer's address on record with DDS. It is not apparent from the envelope that a DL/ID is included. As a security precaution, it cannot be forwarded to another address. If undeliverable, it will be returned to DDS.
Yes. There are several states that issue Interims and mail customer’s Permanent DL/IDs from a central issuance facility.
In a continuing effort to combat document fraud and ultimately protect the citizens of Georgia, customers will now be issued an Interim DL/ID when visiting one of our Customer Service Centers (CSCs). This will allow for additional time to verify eligibility. The security and integrity of printing the Permanent DL/ID requires special equipment and verification processes that are cost prohibitive to place in each CSC.

The GA Department of Driver Services considers the interim DL/IDs to be an official government issued document including a photo ID and other security features. Identification and other requirements necessary for airline travel are established by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security - Transportation Security Administration. The new DL/IDs will contain the same information as existing DL/IDs. However, some information may be in a different location on the new cards. The new license will display the name on more than one line. This will allow for the complete customer name to be displayed on the license. Additionally, the address field will contain more characters allowing, in most cases, the license to display the full address. The new license will clearly display the county of residence instead of a code that may not be clear to the customer.
Yes. The new DL/IDs will contain a high quality digitized color photo to ensure quality of the customer's image. It also includes two smaller images of the customer.

If you qualify for internet services, you will automatically receive the new DL design once it is available. To be qualified, the DDS must have a valid photo and signature saved on file digitally, and there can be no outstanding cancellations, suspensions or revocations on your driving record. DDS highly recommends that you use our online services when possible.

Yes. Currently, subject to certain restrictions, the 5 year and 8 year renewal options are still available at the same price. Fees are $20 for a 5-year license and $32 for a 8-year license.
Customers should return to a CSC with appropriate documentation and request another Interim. A standard $5 fee for lost licenses replacement will apply.

No. Previously issued DL/IDs will remain unexpired until their expiration date. The customer will obtain a newly designed DL/ID upon renewal. Remember that you will not receive a Permanent DL/ID on the same day you visit a CSC, so plan ahead. Georgia DL/IDs can be renewed up to 150 days before the expiration date.
Non-citizen DL/IDs will be labeled “Limited Term” in the title area and includes the expiration date and the words “Limited Term” printed in purple text.
The text color, header color, and abbreviation codes vary depending on the type of DL/IDs and/or special permits. For example, non-commercial licenses will be titled in black text, commercial licenses in blue text, and some limited permits will contain red text.
The Interim DL/ID is designed to last as long as it is unexpired, under normal wear and tear. The Customer should exercise the same care of the Interim DL/ID as they would for paper money.
No. The requirements will not change to exchange an unexpired out of state DL/ID for a Georgia DL/ID.

Yes, the Social Security Administration will accept the new Georgia Interim DL/ID. Please contact the Social Security Administration 1-800-772-1213, to speak to a Social Security representative between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
