  1. Will the DL/IDs renewal by mail and Internet still be available?

    Yes

  2. Do I have to obtain a new DL/ID even though my current DL/ID is still valid?

    No.  Previously issued DL/IDs will remain valid until their expiration date.  The customer will obtain a newly designed DL/ID upon renewal.  Remember that you will not receive a Permanent DL/ID on the same day you visit a CSC, so plan ahead.  Georgia DL/IDs can be renewed up to 150 days before the expiration date.

  3. When will Georgia begin issuing new DL/IDs?

    Georgia’s new DL/IDs will be introduced in a regionally phased implementation, beginning in fall 2009 and scheduled for completion by Winter.

  4. Why do all DL/IDs have security features?

    Security features of the new Georgia DL/IDs are designed to prevent counterfeiting or alteration of information and  photographs and make it easier to identify fraudulent licenses and identification cards.

  5. What security features are on the Permanent DL/IDs?
    • Fine lines that create the DL/ID card’s background
    •  Signatures that overlap the card holder’s photograph
    • Two small half tone or ghost photographs of the card holder that appears in the lower right side of the card
    • The card holder’s signature is laser engraved over the photograph, which has a raised surface
    • The State Seal over the front of the card responds to ultra-violet light
    • A Kinegram or optically variable device on the back of the card that varies as the card’s orientation is moved
    • 2-Dimensional Bar Code that contains the information appearing on the card.
  6. What does the Interim look like?

    The Interim DL/ID is printed on a secure paper, with color backgrounds, color images, color photo, and customer signature. When properly folded the Interim DL/ID is similar in size to the permanent DL/ID.

  7. Will there be usable medical information on the new DL/IDs?

    Customers who are issued an ID for Disabled Person may provide medical information which will appear on the back of the ID card.

  8. Will any of the information on the current DL/IDs be omitted on the new license?


    Yes. The date on which an under 21 teen reaches age 21 will not be on the new DL/IDs.

  9. How will "Under 21" be designated?

    The DL/IDs and permits for customers under age 21 will be displayed in the vertical format. The vertical format is illustrated on our brochure.

  10. How will the appearance of the CDL licenses and permits differ from the regular DLs?

    The new Commercial DLs and permits will be labeled with the word “Commercial" and will be printed in a distinctive blue text.

  11. Will there be a bar code and what purpose will it serve?

    The new cards will contain a bar code that is compliant with AAMVA (American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators) standards.  The bar code is designed to allow access by law enforcement, retailers and government entities. The barcode will contain the information defined on the front of the card and can be used to expedite verification that the front of the document has not been altered.

  12. Will there be any distinction for Non Citizen DL/IDs?

    Non citizen DL/IDs will be labeled “Limited Term” in the title area and includes the expiration date and the words “Limited Term” printed in purple text.

  13. What are the differences in appearance for each type of DL/IDs?

    The text color, header color, and abbreviation codes vary depending on the type of DL/IDs and/or special permits. For example, non commercial licenses will be titled in black text, commercial licenses in blue text, and some limited permits will contain red text.

  14. Is the permanent DL/ID the same size and shape as the current version?


    The DL/IDs' physical dimensions are the same as the current DL/IDs.  However, there will be a vertical orientation of the DL/ID if the card holder is under the age of 21.

  15. Will the new DL/IDs serve all the same purposes as the current DL/IDs?

    Yes

  16. What is difference between the current DL/IDs and the new Permanent DL/IDs?

    The new Permanent DL/IDs has a new appearance, contains more security features, and will be mailed to you from a secure production facility.

  17. Will the timeframe change for online/mail renewals when getting the new DL/IDs?

    The process, including the time frame, will be the same as the current automated renewal program.

  18. Will a customer still be able to participate in the Motor Voter program?

    Yes!  Georgia residents who are United States citizens may continue to apply to register to vote as part of many transactions conducted at the DDS' customer service centers or via the internet.

  19. When will my permanent DL/ID be delivered?

    Customers will have their Permanent DL/ID mailed to them before the Interim’s expiration date if they meet all eligibility and verification requirements.  The new cards are centrally produced at a secure production facility in Georgia, then mailed to the cardholder, who will generally receive the new DL/ID within 30 days of receiving the interim document.

  20. Why is DDS mailing the Permanent DL/IDs from a central facility?

    Mailing from a centralized facility will reduce the opportunity for fraud and theft by operating the document printing process in a highly secure facility.  The permanent DL/ID will be mailed to the customer address on record with DDS from the secured production facility located in Georgia.

  21. What should I do if my Permanent DL/ID is not delivered within 30 days?

    If you live in Metro Atlanta, you should call the DDS Customer Contact Center at (678) 413-8400 to speak with a representative who can assist you.  If you live outside Metro Atlanta, you should call the DDS Customer Contact Center at 1-866.754.3687.

  22. Will all current DDS DL/ID services (i.e., Online, Status Line) still be available with the new DL/IDs?

    Yes

  23. Will the new DL/ID be Real ID/Pass ID compliant?

    The new DL/IDs will position Georgia to become compliant should the State choose to comply with any federal licensing mandates.

  24. Will some customers still receive multiple DLs?

    Yes, DL/IDs, Instructional Permits and Limited Permits will remain separate documents. Customer may have different documents based on the services they are requesting.

  25. Will I receive an Interim for each class/type of license or ID that I am issued?

    It depends on what is being issued. If class restrictions apply, separate Interims will be issued.

  26. Will you still have to provide proof of identity to replace a lost DL/ID card?

    Yes.  For first issuance, renewals or replacements, customers are still required to provide original documentation to satisfy identity, residency and citizenship requirements.

  27. Will there be an express process for quicker delivery of the permanent DL/ID? Can I arrange pick-up?

    Not at this time.

  28. How durable is the Interim DL/ID?

    The Interim DL/ID is designed to last as long as it is valid, under normal wear and tear.  The Customer should exercise the same care of  the Interim DL/ID as they would for paper money.

  29. Does the new system still allow a customer to apply to register to vote in conjunction with a transaction at the DDS?

    Yes.  Georgia residents who are United States citizens may continue to apply to register to vote as part of many transactions conducted at the DDS' customer service centers or via the internet.

  30. Has DDS communicated to the public and businesses that Georgia will begin issuing new DL/IDs?

    The DDS is conducting an extensive public outreach campaign to educate the public, governments and businesses that Georgia will be issuing a newly designed more secure DL/ID which will ultimately change the issuance process.

  31. Will the fee and term limits on the new DL/IDs be the same as the old DL/IDs ?

    Yes

  32. Will Drivers "Under 21" receive Interim DL/IDs?

    Yes. The process for all applicants regardless of age is to be issued an Interim DL/ID when visiting a CSC and then receiving a Permanent DL/ID via mail.

  33. Will the DL/IDs for customers "Under 21" years old be different?

    Yes. An important security feature is the orientation of the “Under 21” year old DL/IDs.  The Interim and Permanent DL/IDs will be printed vertically for easy identification of customers under the age of 21 years.  Multiple levels of card security will deter tampering and reduce fraud.

  34. Can I keep the Interim DL/ID after my Permanent DL/ID arrives in the mail?

    When you receive the Permanent DL/ID, the Interim license should be destroyed in accordance with Georgia law and to safeguard personal information.

  35. What if there is an error on the Permanent DL/ID when it arrives?

    The customer should review their Permanent DL/ID.  If, the customer should find a discrepancy with their DL/ID, they should immediately return to the CSC and reinitiate the process to correct the error.

  36. What should I do if my Permanent DL/ID isn’t delivered within 30 days?

    If you live in Metro Atlanta, you should call the DDS Customer Contact Center at (678) 413-8400 to speak with a representative who can assist you.  If you live outside Metro Atlanta, you should call the DDS Customer Contact Center at 1-866.754.3687.

  37. Is it safe to mail my Permanent DL/ID?

    Yes, the Permanent DL/IDs will be mailed to a customer's address on record with DDS.  It is not apparent from the envelope that a DL/ID is included. As a security precaution, it cannot be forwarded to another address. If undeliverable, it will be returned to DDS.

  38. Do other states issue Interim DL/IDs and mail the Permanent DL/ID from a central issuance facility?

    Yes.  There are several states that issue Interims and mail customer’s Permanent DL/IDs from a central issuance facility.

  39. What do I do if my Interim DL/ID has an error?

    If you live in Metro Atlanta, you should call the DDS Customer Contact Center at (678) 413-8400 to speak with a representative who can assist you.  If you live outside Metro Atlanta, you should call the DDS Customer Contact Center at 1-866.754.3687.

  40. Why is DDS now issuing Interim DL/IDs?

    In a continuing effort to combat document fraud and ultimately protect the citizens of Georgia, customers will now be issued an Interim DL/ID when visiting one of our Customer Service Centers (CSCs).  This will allow for additional time to verify eligibility.  The security and integrity of printing the Permanent DL/ID requires special equipment and verification processes that are cost prohibitive to place in each CSC.

  41. Will there be a change in requirements to exchange a valid out of state DL/ID for a Georgia DL/ID?

    No.  The requirements will not change to exchange a valid out of state DL/ID for a Georgia DL/ID.

  42. Will customers be required to do anything different than today to obtain a Georgia DL/ID?

    No.  The Requirements have not changed to obtain a Georgia DL/ID.

  43. Will my old DL/ID still be accepted until its expiration date?

    Yes. Previously issued Georgia DL/IDs will remain valid until their expiration date.

  44. What is different about the new Permanent DL/IDs?

    The Permanent DL/ID has a new appearance, contains more security features, and will be mailed to you from a secure production facility located in Georgia.

  45. Will the Interim DL/ID be accepted for airline travel?

    The GA Department of Driver Services considers the interim DL/IDs to be an official government issued document including a photo ID and other security features. Identification and other requirements necessary for airline travel are established by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security - Transportation Security Administration.  More information can be found at www.tsa.gov

  46. Do I have to obtain a new license ID even though my current license is still valid?

    No.  Previously issued DL/IDs will remain valid until their expiration date.  The customer will obtain a newly designed DL/ID upon renewal.

  47. Will there be any additional information on the new DL/IDs?

    The new DL/IDs will contain the same information as existing DL/IDs.  However, some information may be in a different location on the new cards. The new license will display the name on more than one line. This will allow for the complete customer name to be displayed on the license. Additionally, the address field will contain more characters allowing, in most cases, the license to display the full address. The new license will clearly display the county of residence instead of a code that may not be clear to the customer.

  48. Will the quality of the photo change?

    Yes.  The new DL/IDs will contain a high quality digitized color photo to ensure quality of the customer's image.  It also includes two smaller images of the customer.

  49. Who do I contact to check on the status of my Permanent DL/ID?

    To check on status of a Permanent DL/ID the customer should call the DDS Contact Center.  If you live in Metro Atlanta, you should call the DDS Customer Contact Center at (678) 413-8400 to speak with a representative who can assist you.  If you live outside Metro Atlanta, you should call the DDS Customer Contact Center at 1-866.754.3687.

  50. Will the Social Security Administration accept the new Georgia Interim DL/ID for identity purposes?

    The Social Security Administration has opted not to accept the new Georgia Interim DL/ID. Individuals will not be allowed to present this document in lieu of the permanent Georgia D/L for identity purposes. Please contact the Social Security Administration 1-800-772-1213, to speak to a Social Security representative between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  51. What security features are on the Interim DL/ID?
    • Fine lines that are printed on security paper
    • Signatures that overlap the card holder’s photograph
    • A small half tone or ghost photograph of the card holder that appears in the lower right side of the card
    • 2-Dimensional Bar Code that contains the information appearing on the card.
    • The state seal is created with heat sensitive ink, which disappears when heated
    • Outlines of the state of Georgia will glow green when viewed with ultra-violet light
    • Fibers in the security paper will glow when viewed with ultra-violet light.

     

  52. Can I get a new DL/ID by Internet if I want one?

    If you qualify for internet services, you will automatically receive the new DL design once it is available. To be qualified, the DDS must have a valid photo and signature saved on file digitally, and there can be no outstanding cancellations, suspensions or revocations on your driving record. DDS highly recommends that you use our online services when possible.

  53. Will the fee and term limits on the new license be the same ?

    Yes.  Currently, subject to certain restrictions, the 5 year and 8 year renewal options are still available at the same price.  Fees are $20 for a 5-year license and $32 for a 8-year license.

  54. What if my Interim is lost or destroyed before delivery of my Permanent DL/ID?

    Customers should return to a CSC with appropriate documentation and request another Interim.  A standard $5 fee for lost licenses replacement will apply.
