Letter from the Commissioner

Rob Mikell - DDS Commissioner

Dear Friends,

The team members of the Department of Driver Services (DDS) and I are pleased to welcome you to our website. Our expectation is that it will provide a convenient, and in many cases discounted, opportunity for you to conduct your business with our agency.

In order to provide exceptional customer service and 24 hour access to many of our services, DDS enables every licensed driver to create a secure, personal DDS online account. You may use your account for many purposes that will allow you to skip or streamline a visit to one of our offices. For example, we just launched an option for submitting your driver’s license application online, allowing you to complete this step, which is required before receiving a new or updated license or ID, more efficiently. The application may be submitted through a desktop computer, tablet, or smartphone, and it saves you time because your information is not printed, but securely uploaded directly to our mainframe. This paperless process puts the accuracy of your information in your own hands and eliminates the need for retyping by a driver examiner.

There are many other services offered online. Your online account will allow you to apply for a lost license, to change your address, to obtain a copy of your driving record, to view any points you may have accrued from traffic offenses, to view any suspensions, to pay reinstatement fees, and much more. Please know that some of your online transactions may be done for a discounted price compared to in-person at a Customer Service Center (CSC). To create your account, please visit https://online.dds.ga.gov/onlineservices/account/login.aspx.

As of July 2, 2012, DDS became compliant with the REAL ID Act. In June of this year, DDS issued its three millionth REAL ID compliant license. The REAL ID Act requires each of us, even those who have been licensed to drive in Georgia for many years, to visit a CSC in person to present original documentation to prove: personal identity, residential address, and social security number. Non-citizens must also prove legal presence. To prepare yourself to complete your renewal in one visit, please take a few minutes to create a Personal Custom Document Checklist using our website feature at http://www.dds.ga.gov/secureid/. To better serve you, customers who visit a CSC without sufficient residency documents or proof of the social security number may avoid a return visit (i.e. Skip a Trip) by submitting these documents by logging into your personal online account, by fax, or by mail. To submit your documents online, please visit https://online.dds.ga.gov/onlineservices/account/login.aspx.

DDS continues to develop new technology to improve our processes while protecting the safety and identity of the citizens of Georgia. Currently, we are piloting self-service check-in kiosks in three of our field offices. Also, our field offices now use GPS-enabled tablet computers to score the skills tests and driving tests for commercial driver customers. I hope that you will check this website often for new services and information.

At DDS, we take our customer service responsibilities very seriously, as we do our “We C.A.R.E.” values of Communication, Accountability, Respect, and Ethics. I encourage you to let us know how we are doing at: https://online.dds.ga.gov/feedback/.

If you have a comment, a compliment, or a concern that you need to deliver to me directly, you may email me at DDS_commissioner@dds.ga.gov.

Warm regards,

Rob Mikell
Commissioner
