Renewing your Driver's License

Click here if you are not a US citizen

Many Georgia citizens may be eligible to renew their valid driver's license or Georgia Identification card over the internet or by mail.

  • If you are eligible, you will receive a Renewal Application by mail from the DDS sixty days before your driver's license expiration date. To be qualified, the DDS must have a valid photo and signature saved on file digitally, and there can be no outstanding cancellations, suspensions or revocations on your driving record.

  • DDS is required by Georgia law to administer a vision test to customers age 64 or older prior to renewing or issuing a Georgia driver's license. Because the vision test can only be taken in person at a Customer Service Center, customers age 64 or older are not eligible for auto-renewal services.

  • The Renewal Application will be mailed to your last known mailing address on file with the DDS. Applications should not be forwarded to new addresses by the U.S. Postal Service, but in some occasions that may happen.

  • No changes to license information, including name, address or gender, can be done during renewal. You must visit a Customer Service Center to renew your license in person if you want to make changes to any information during the renewal process.

  • Georgia law now requires all non-citizens provide proof of lawful presence in the United States at each renewal of the driver's license or ID. You may visit any Customer Service Center and renew your license or ID with the appropriate immigration documentation.

  • The Renewal Application will have an individualized Resident Identification Number (RIN) that the customer must use along with the month and day of your last issue/exam date from the current license or ID card. This number allows us to confirm identity.

  • After receiving the Renewal Application, you may follow the instructions to renew over the Internet or by mail.

  • American Express, Discover, Master Card and Visa are acceptable forms of payment.

  • The cost of renewing a driver's license is $20 for 5 years and $35 for 10 years. The cost of renewing an identification card is also $20 for 5 years and $35 for 10 years. There is no service fee charged for choosing to renew by Internet or by mail.

NOTE: For eligible license types (Class C, CM, D and DM), a $5 discount applies when you renew by mail or internet.

  • A successful transaction takes less than five minutes, and your replacement license will be mailed to you in about thirty days.

For additional questions you may contact our Customer Service Center at (678) 413-8400. If you're calling from an area code outside the metro Atlanta, but within Georgia, you may call (866) 754-3687 (Inside Georgia but outside the Metro Atlanta Area).
