GA Driver Services Commissioner Unveils New Driver Training Manuals
Public/Private Partnership Is Cost Saving; Merges Print with Online Technology
Commissioner Rob Mikell of the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) recently unveiled the newly redesigned Georgia driver training manuals (Drivers Manual, Motorcycle Operators Manual and Commercial Drivers Manual). The three manuals have been converted to an easy-to-read magazine format with mobile applications featuring improved graphics and organization. The new layout allows for the placement of paid advertising which covers a portion of production costs and will ultimately save the state hundreds of thousands of dollars in printing costs.
“I am proud that DDS has become the first driver’s licensing entity to approach the driver education manuals in this manner,” said Mikell. “Creating this public/private partnership not only allows DDS to utilize the cost savings for other important driver services programs, but the new mobile technology will give customers additional options as they prepare for their license,” he added.
After a competitive bidding process, DDS partnered with J.F. Griffin – an award winning publishing house that specializes in producing state regulation books including the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Hunting Regulation Guide. J.F. Griffin supports the DDS’ team with the design, layout and editing of each manual. The marketing and sales of advertising is managed by J.F. Griffin. J.F. Griffin also distributes the manuals to the DDS’ customer service center – another substantial cost savings.
The new manuals may be accessed by visiting the DDS website at www.dds.ga.gov or at this direct link http://www.eregulations.com/georgia/driver/. The manuals are available instantly as a download or may be obtained free of charge at each of the DDS Customer Service Centers throughout the state.
All three manuals are powered by the Layar application technology. This free, mobile app gives additional digital content that readers can engage by using smartphones or tablets. It contains live hyperlinks to expand content and further enhance the user experience. The manuals also utilize QR Code technology throughout the publications to provide links to additional information for customers.
