Driver’s license center opens in temporary location

The Newnan driver's license center opened Wednesday in a temporary site, next door to the permanent site.

The Georgia Department of Drivers Services customer service center, located in the Eastgate Shopping Center on Bullsboro Drive, sustained serious water damage last Friday, caused by a roof leak at an adjacent building.

Last week, there were hopes that the DDS Newnan center would only be closed a few days, but the damage turned out to be more severe than originally thought.

On Monday, DDS officials said the center would be closed at least all week.

But DDS officials, Coweta County officials, and the landlord, Eastgate Partners/First Colony, along with the city of Newnan's Building Department, worked quickly to get the temporary service center open.

Coweta County provides space for the driver’s license center, by leasing the commercial space, under an agreement with DDS.

Tuesday night, Associate Coweta County Administrator Eddie Whitlock appeared before the Coweta County Commissioners to get the lease agreements signed for the temporary facility.

DDS crews worked long hours Tuesday night and Wednesday morning to get the office open.

On Wednesday afternoon, DDS workers were going back and forth between the damaged center and the temporary location.

A good crowd was on hand to get services Wednesday afternoon, but it was a smaller crowd than usual.

Kevin Keheley was renewing his driver's license to get the new "secure ID." He said he was in and out in less than 30 minutes — the shortest time it had ever taken him at DDS.

The DDS customer service center is located at 132/134 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan.
